Sophia Wai Yee Ginsburg is a London and Hong Kong-based actor, interdisciplinary theatre maker, and writer. She is the founder and lead artist of Soapbox Theatre Company. Her debut production, Strange Contagions, premiered at Camden People’s Theatre in 2023 and was shortlisted for the Untapped Award. She is also a member of the film production company Typhoon8, which she co-founded with Jessica Eu.
As a playwright, Sophia has developed work with Soho Writers’ Lab and Vital Exposure, including The Most Famous Lesbian in Asia and White Baby (Camden People’s Theatre Every Body Festival). She was a Wellspring Playwright with Vital Exposure in 2023, and her writing was featured in a showcase at Soho Theatre in February 2024. She is currently part of Soho Writers’ Lab 2024–2025.
Sophia’s practice explores history, belonging, and identity through radical, movement-driven performance.
She earned her MFA in Advanced Theatre Practice from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and holds a BA from Tufts University in Theatre and Performance Studies and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, graduating summa cum laude with the Goddard Memorial Prize for Excellence in Acting. She also studied at Wellesley College and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and trained with New Earth Theatre, the Almeida Theatre’s facilitation and Young Producers courses, and the Young Vic Fresh Direction 2023–2024 programme.
